Free Kitchen Caddies Available From Bracken Ridge Ward Office

Bracken Ridge compost caddies are available free to ward residents who register for BCC’s Community Composting program, with collection through the ward office at Bracken Ridge Library.

The kitchen caddies are designed to collect food scraps at home and transport them to a participating community composting hub. Registered participants should contact the ward office before visiting to confirm that caddies are available.

Using Bracken Ridge Compost Caddies

Community composting hubs provide places where food scraps and other accepted organic material can be turned into nutrients for soil.

BCC runs the program in partnership with community gardens across Brisbane. Residents must register online to participate and can search for a nearby hub by entering their address or suburb.

Food waste accounts for more than 25 per cent of the average Brisbane kerbside red-lid bin. Composting suitable scraps helps reduce the amount of food waste sent to landfill and the harmful greenhouse gas emissions associated with it.

At a participating hub, residents place fruit and vegetable scraps into the designated food-scrap bin. Carbon material is then added from a separate bin before the compost bin is closed. Participants should follow the onsite instructions at their chosen location.

What The Free Offer Covers

The free offer covers the kitchen caddy available to registered participants. It does not identify composting equipment, private composting services or all hub services as free.

Residents should contact their selected hub before visiting to confirm its drop-off hours, accepted materials and whether any fees apply. Requirements may differ between locations.

The Bracken Ridge compost caddies are intended for suitable food scraps. Plastics, styrofoam, treated wood, oil and grass clippings cannot be placed in the composting bins because the program accepts organic material only.

Workshops and tours may also be available for residents interested in learning more about composting. Individual hubs can also be contacted about volunteer opportunities.

Separate Rebates For Home Equipment

Residents without a nearby community composting hub can consider composting at home or volunteering at an existing hub.

A separate Compost Rebate program provides up to $100 towards eligible composting or worm-farming equipment. A rebate of up to $200 is available for eligible food-waste dehydrators or in-sink food-disposal systems.

The rebate applies only to eligible purchases and is separate from the free kitchen caddy offer.

Bracken Ridge Ward residents seeking a caddy must register online and contact the ward office at Bracken Ridge Library to confirm availability. Hub hours, accepted materials and possible fees should also be checked before food scraps are taken for drop-off.
