School’s Out Returns To Bracken Ridge With Local Youth At Its Centre

A free Bracken Ridge youth event will bring local teenagers, young performers, student organisers and families together when School’s Out on the Green returns for an end-of-term evening of live music.

The twice-yearly event will be held from 5pm to 9pm on Friday, 18 September on the green outside Bracken Ridge Library, at Bracken Street and Barrett Street.

Called School’s Out! Dine In, the September edition will have a retro theme while continuing the event’s free, alcohol-free and supervised format for local teenagers.

Bracken Ridge Youth Event Creates Space For Local Teens

School’s Out on the Green is designed as a place where teenagers can spend time together at the end of the school term, whether they are performing, helping organise the event or simply attending with friends.

Live music is a central part of the program, with organisers seeking young local performers for the September event. Expressions of interest opened on 19 August, and applications were being reviewed as the line-up was developed.

The event also attracts parents, who form part of the audience supporting young performers.

Keeping entry free is intended to make the evening accessible across the community, while the supervised and alcohol-free setting provides an age-appropriate environment for young people.

Students Help Shape The Night

Local high school students in Years 10 to 12 also have a direct role in planning School’s Out on the Green.

The organising committee works across branding, promotion, band selection and stage timing, giving students practical involvement in how the event is presented and run.

For the September edition, committee members selected the retro theme, giving performers flexibility to interpret the concept through their music and presentation.

The experience extends beyond those appearing on stage. Students involved behind the scenes gain experience in event organisation and leadership, while young musicians have an opportunity to perform before a live audience.

Some performers who first appeared at School’s Out have continued performing after finishing school.

Local Participation At The Centre

The event brings together several forms of youth participation, from performing and event planning to simply spending time with friends after exams and assignments.

It also gives local young musicians an audience within their own community while allowing students involved in organising the event to help determine its look, program and entertainment.

School’s Out on the Green will run from 5pm to 9pm on Friday, 18 September at the Bracken Ridge Library Green, on the corner of Bracken Street and Barrett Street.
